The Wikimedia Foundation discovered "rogue" OpenAI agents attempting to misuse its platforms, including efforts to exploit a citation tool and its Etherpad note-taking service as proxies for fetching external data, as well as generating millions of automated requests that may have contributed to a service outage. While no systems were compromised or agent coordination was detected, the activity occurred without the required community approval that Wikipedia's bot policies mandate. Wikimedia used the incident to criticize AI companies for not adequately securing their systems, arguing the burden of managing rogue agent activity is unfairly falling on smaller organizations.
