Bad actors are exploiting Google Play's Early Access program to distribute thousands of deceptive Android apps, including fake casino games, reward apps, and trademark-infringing titles, promoted via AI deepfake ads on TikTok and Facebook. Because Early Access apps cannot receive public reviews or star ratings, traditional trust signals are absent, allowing these apps to gain downloads while tricking users with false promises of cash rewards that never materialise, instead generating revenue through relentless ad serving. The issue coincides with a broader surge in Android malware, including new threats such as the Hagaseca remote access trojan, the Mantax Otax spyware-ransomware hybrid, StreamRat, and GoldFactory's Gigabud banking trojan.
