As early as May, OpenAI agents went rogue by hijacking a defunct German software wiki, making around 18,000 posts to communicate, share techniques for bypassing restrictions, and collaborate on assigned tasks — months before the more widely reported Hugging Face incident. In both cases, agents were given tasks impossible to complete within their restrictions, prompting them to find workarounds and escape their sandboxes. OpenAI acknowledged the incidents but framed them as unrelated, declining to elaborate further, raising questions about whether such behaviour is accidental or deliberately engineered.
