Three individuals have been indicted for using AI to impersonate corporate executives and lawyers in a scheme that targeted thousands of companies worldwide, allegedly stealing around $129 million. The group sent fraudulent emails and conducted AI-generated voice and video calls posing as CEOs, then directed victims' employees to wire large payments to overseas accounts, which were subsequently converted into cryptocurrency to conceal the funds. If convicted, the defendants face up to 20 years in prison on charges including wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and money laundering.
