Andrej Karpathy Ditches the Classroom for Anthropic's Pretraining Team
Andrej Karpathy, OpenAI founding member, former Tesla AI director, and arguably the most famous AI educator on the internet, announced Tuesday he's joining Anthropic. Starting this week.
He'll be working on Anthropic's pretraining team, the group responsible for the foundational training runs that shape Claude's core capabilities. Beyond that, he'll help spin up a new team focused on using Claude to accelerate pretraining research itself. That last bit is worth paying attention to. AI labs increasingly want AI to do the work of improving AI, and having someone of Karpathy's calibre leading that charge is not a trivial hire.
"I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative," Karpathy wrote on X. "I am very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D."
For those who've somehow missed him: Karpathy helped found OpenAI, then spent years at Tesla running the computer vision work behind Autopilot. After leaving Tesla in 2022 he built a substantial following making genuinely good technical content on YouTube and X, the kind of stuff that actually teaches people how transformers work rather than just gesturing at them vaguely. He also coined the term "vibe coding", which has since escaped into the wild and refuses to die. Earlier this year he described himself as being in a "state of AI psychosis" since December, stress-testing frontier models with an intensity most people reserve for things that matter less.
He says he's still passionate about education and plans to return to it eventually. Whether "eventually" means six months or six years is anyone's guess.
The Anthropic angle is interesting. The company has quietly become a serious attractor for top-tier technical talent, and Karpathy is as high-profile as it gets. The AI race gets narrated mostly through funding announcements and GPU stockpiles, but the real constraint has always been the number of researchers who can actually move the needle. That pool is very small. Anthropic just landed one of the most recognisable names in it.
